Cardinal Path
In 2026, Housing Alexandria delivered 31 affordable townhomes at Cardinal Path for first-time homebuyers. Construction is now underway on the condominium building at the site, officially named Hart House in honor of Harry P. “Bud” Hart.
Hart House will feature five two-bedroom, two-bath condominium units. Expected to be completed in early 2027, each unit will be priced at $275K.
Housing Alexandria uses a shared-equity homeownership model to ensure these homes remain affordable in perpetuity. Homes will be priced for households making up to 80% of the Area Median Income. More about Bud Hart and Cardinal Path
Bud practiced law for 61 years in Northern Virginia, primarily in Alexandria, specializing in zoning and land-use law. Retired now, Bud is a resident of Alexandria and a Living Legends of Alexandria inductee. He is known for his humanitarian work in numerous civic and volunteer organizations. Bud is a long-term board member of Sheltered Homes of Alexandria (SHA), a non-profit organization that provides housing and services for adults with disabilities.
Cardinal Path is the result of an assemblage of three separate lots, including one lot owned by the City of Alexandria and one lot owned by SHA. Since 1990, SHA has operated a group home for 7 clients. This land contribution by SHA and the City to Cardinal Path unlocked the opportunity to develop 36 affordable homes for first-time homebuyers and provide expanded facilities for SHA at Hart House. By naming the building Hart House, we proudly recognize Bud’s lasting contributions to Alexandria and his steadfast advocacy.
This community includes:
- 36 homeownership units (31 townhomes, and 5 condominium flats which will be single story and elevator accessible)
- 7 flats owned and occupied by Sheltered Homes of Alexandria (SHA), serving up to 12 residents
- 2 garage spaces per townhome, plus 19 surface parking spaces (for SHA, condominium flats occupants, as well as guests)
Site Plan:
- 48% of the site will be open space, including 7,900 SQF of preserved tree canopy
- Final plan will provide 56% of site with tree canopy coverage (above required 25%)
- Complete avoidance of an “isolated wetland of minimal ecological value”
