Purpose of Position

The Human Resources (HR) Coordinator supports the effective execution of HR operations by providing administrative and operational support across key HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, records management, benefits administration, and compliance. This position is critical in fostering a positive team member experience by ensuring HR processes run efficiently and in alignment with organizational values and governing laws. The HR Coordinator also serves as a first point of contact for team member inquiries, helping to promote a workplace culture rooted in equity, transparency, and continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and proactive professional with strong organizational skills, a foundational understanding of HR practices, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. They are approachable, resourceful, and committed to delivering excellent service while maintaining confidentiality and upholding HR compliance standards. This position reports to the People Operations lead.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Team Member Life Cycle

-Coordinate full-cycle recruitment activities, including job postings, candidate evaluation, scheduling, interviews, and all communication.

-Conduct the onboarding process by completing background checks, verifying I-9s, scheduling training, and preparing the team member’s workspace and required resources.

-Coordinate and track performance evaluations across teams and provide administrative support for goal-setting and evaluation processes.

-Respond to team member questions or requests about personnel policies, procedures, benefits, and general HR functions confidentially and professionally.

-Identify skill and knowledge gaps to recommend training opportunities that support team member growth.

-Collaborate with other teams on initiatives that enhance team member engagement and HALX culture.

-Coordinate offboarding activities, including exit interviews, final pay, and benefits discontinuation or continuation (COBRA).

-Maintain and update team member records in Human Resources Information System (HRIS), ensuring data accuracy and confidentiality in compliance with legal and organizational standards.

-Ensuring policies and operations adhere to governing laws and regulators (OSHA, VEC, DOL, etc.).

Benefits Administration

-Process payroll, ensuring accuracy in wages, tax withholdings, and deductions.

-Serve as primary liaison to team members for benefits-related questions, enrollment, assisting with claims, terminations, and qualifying life events.

-Work with benefits vendors and brokers to resolve team member issues, ensure timely enrollment processing, and verify accurate invoice reconciliation.

-Support organizational wellness initiatives and benefits-related employee engagement programs.

Ongoing Work

-Maintain professional and technical certifications and knowledge by completing required training, attending subject-relevant educational workshops, and reviewing professional publications.

-Support HALX fundraising and brand-building campaigns.

-Foster Housing Alexandria’s mission, culture, values, strategic plan, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

-Perform other duties as directed.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

-Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, Organizational Development, Psychology, or related field. Substitutable with SHRM Certification.

-Two years of professional experience in recruiting and benefits administration.

-Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.

-Proficient in HR software (Paychex).

-Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities efficiently.

-Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a professional and approachable demeanor.

-Commitment to supporting Housing Alexandria’s mission, values, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

Beneficial Skills and Qualifications

-Spanish or Amharic proficiency.

-Comfortable with various responsibilities, including day-to-day administrative tasks and big-picture strategic projects, which may evolve.

-Experience aiding individuals and groups facing difficulties such as economic disadvantage, unemployment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, and inadequate housing.

 

Position Requirements   

This is a full-time position requiring the team member to be locally in the DMV area and must be onsite in the Housing Alexandria corporate office a minimum of 3 full days per week. Tuesday & Thursday are mandatory to be on-site. This position requires the team member to occasionally work evenings and weekends and travel locally in the DMV area.

Salary and Benefits

Commensurate with experience. $50,000 to $55,000 annually.

Purpose of Position  

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining the physical integrity and overall functionality of the multi-family property. This role ensures that the community remains a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for residents by performing routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on building systems, facilities, and equipment. By addressing maintenance needs promptly and proactively, the team member helps preserve the long-term value of the property and contributes to HALX’s mission of providing affordable and quality housing for all. 

The ideal candidate is proficient in a diverse set of skills to handle various aspects of property upkeep, including, but not limited to, HVAC systems, plumbing, appliance repair, basic mechanical skills, and drywall. They are a creative problem solver with excellent time management and customer service skills. This position reports directly to the Community Manager or relevant supervisor. 

 

Primary Responsibilities 

Maintenance & Repairs 

-Respond promptly to resident maintenance requests, addressing plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, appliance repair, and other general handyman needs. 

-Conduct routine maintenance tasks to uphold community safety, quality, and appearance, such as repairing leaks, addressing trip hazards, and replacing smoke detectors. 

-Prepare recently vacated units for new residents by performing repairs, painting, drywall patching, and window/door replacements. 

-Track, respond to, escalate, and close maintenance tickets efficiently using CRM software, ensuring all issues are resolved to HALX standards. 

-Maintain effective communication with residents and vendors regarding repairs, timelines, challenges, and expected outcomes. 

Preventative Maintenance & Inspections  

-Perform regular preventive maintenance, including inspecting building systems and tracking mechanical performance to identify and address potential issues proactively. 

-Conduct routine property inspections, including units, common areas, and grounds, to ensure safety, cleanliness, and compliance with HALX standards. 

-Implement and follow safety protocols, including OSHA standards and local building codes, to ensure all work complies with regulations. 

Vendor Support 

-Support the coordination of vendor activities for repairs and services beyond personal expertise, ensuring work is completed to HALX quality standards and in compliance with community rules. 

-Communicate feedback or concerns about vendor performance to the Community Manager and assist with approving vendor invoices and payments. 

Ongoing Work  

-Maintain professional and technical knowledge by completing required training, obtaining necessary certification, attending subject-relevant educational workshops, and reviewing professional publications.   

-Assist leadership in budgeting, invoice approvals, and financial forecasting to support the community’s operational and revenue goals. 

-Maintain a well-organized inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies, ensuring readiness for maintenance tasks. 

-Support the enforcement of community rules to ensure resident safety and well-being. 

-Foster Housing Alexandria’s mission, culture, values, strategic plan, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  

-Perform other duties as directed.  

 

Required Skills and Qualifications 

-Proficient and general knowledge in the following skills: Plumbing, Mechanical skills, HVAC maintenance, Carpentry, Electrical 

-Ability to operate property management software for maintenance tracking to update work orders, document repairs, and communicate with the property management team.  

-Valid driver’s license.  

-Excellent customer service and communication skills. 

-Ability to meet the physical requirements listed below for long periods. 

-Strong organization and time management skills, with attention to detail.

Physical Requirements 

Maintenance technicians need to be physically fit to perform their job duties, which can include: 

-Lifting: Regularly lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds, and sometimes up to 100 pounds  

-Moving: Pushing, pulling, and moving objects to clean, reach, and service machinery  

-Standing and walking: Prolonged periods of standing and walking  

-Bending and stretching: Frequent bending and stretching to access equipment and objects  

-Climbing: Climbing ladders and steps  

-Stooping, kneeling, and crouching: Stooping, kneeling, and crouching to perform tasks  

-Operating machinery: Operating a variety of machines and equipment, including vehicles, hand tools, and power tools  

-Visual inspection: Being able to visually inspect machines  

-Vision: Having close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus  

-Maintenance technicians may also need to be able to work in noisy, crowded environments, and in and around dust, fumes, and odors. They may also need to be able to work indoors and outdoors year-round.  

 

Beneficial Skills and Qualifications  

-Spanish or Amharic speaking, writing, and reading fluency preferred.  

-Handyperson, technician, or tradesperson education or experience.  

-Familiarity with OSHA safety laws, building codes, and safety regulations.  

-Experience aiding individuals and groups facing difficulties such as economic disadvantage, unemployment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, and inadequate housing.

This full-time position is based on-site, primarily at The Bloom at Braddock community, located at 900 N. Henry St, 22314, and the Station at Potomac Yard, located at 650 Maskell St, 22314. Occasional responsibilities require flexibility for evening or weekend activities. Travel within the City of Alexandria is sometimes required. The physical requirements listed above must be met for long periods of time.

Responsibilities:

The VISTA’s tasks will primarily fall under the umbrella of grant acquisition support and resident data management tasks, while providing support with growing community partnerships. This includes tasks such as grant writing, grant researching, analyzing data, using data to create infographics, cultivating relationships with community members, and strengthening our network of community partners. The VISTA team member will strengthen the fundraising, data, and community outreach strategies within Housing Alexandria and collaborate with team members across the organization to increase our ability to provide services to our residents.
