Sansé and Naja: An Integrated Community

Sansé and Naja is Housing Alexandria’s newest rental property, and is a prime example of our mission to advance affordable housing and integrate community development. It is made of up 495 units, every one of them affordable, with 136 of the units set at deeply affordable rate at 40% Area Median Income (AMI). Additionally, it will include commercial space for mission-oriented organizations and service providers and a central courtyard and open space with amenities and public access easements.

Located in the Chirilagua neighborhood of Arlandria, Housing Alexandria knew that this development had to be created with great intentionality. With concerns of displacement and loss of community, and overcrowding and quality of existing housing already long-standing issues, we wanted to ensure that we were created homes for the residents in the area. Additionally, this neighborhood was the most impacted by COVID-19 crisis across Alexandria. This means the need for affordable options is high. Located on the intersection of Glebe Road and Mt Vernon Avenue, Sansé and Naja is uniquely located to be a key community space.

As the biggest project in Housing Alexandria’s history, here are some key facts:

  • More than 500,000 square feet of mixed-use development
  • 494 units of affordable housing
  • About 20,000 SF of community-serving, commercial space
  • $315 million total budget
  • $78 million in funding committed by City of Alexandria
