It's not over til it's over! The future of Gunston Hall as affordable housing is being resolved through a series of appeals, reviews, court rulings, and continued negotiations. This 68-year old garden apartment development in the City of Alexandria has been at the center of a three-year-old battle. After residents and activists opposed the developer's plans to raze the 56-unit apartment complex, AHDC offered to purchase the property in late 2005 for the assessed market value, to preserve it as affordable housing. The owner rejected the offer and appealed to the City saying the offer was invalid. The City's Board of Zoning Appeals upheld the City's decision and the owner filed a lawsuit. This lawsuit was summarily dismissed in May of this year. The owner appealed the Circuit Court's Summary Judgment decision to the Virginia State Supreme Court and this court denied hearing the case in December. AHDC is continuing its negotiations to purchase the property from the owner. New Opportunities: More to come on Gunston Hall and other possible AHDC projects in the future.
